About Me

I write creative non-fiction about survival in this beautiful and troubled world of ours, a place in constant flux, always remaking itself.

My first book, The Violence of Living, tells the story of my wife Mary Klein’s courage in rewriting the laws on medical aid in dying in the nation’s capital when she had terminal cancer, and how her ferocious, howling German Shepherd brought me through the chaos of grief.
A journalist for over three decades, my articles on economics, politics and human rights have been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Times of London. I have won awards from Reuters and The Associated Press. As managing editor for 100Reporters and at the Thomson-Reuters Foundation, I edited stories from developing countries on corruption for major media outlets, including The Atlantic online, The Intercept and newspapers in Africa and South Asia.
My television and radio experience is extensive. At Reuters, I was Americas editor for Reuters Financial Television, Americas top news editor and global editor for economics, frequently interviewed on CNBC, PBS, BBC America, CBC, CSPAN, NPR and Voice of America. NPR host Diane Rehm featured me in her documentary When My Time Comes about end-of-life issues. I also have moderated discussion panels and conferences at The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and United Nations Conference on Transparency.

Along with my writing, I work in the summers as a naturalist for Gastineau Guiding Company in Southeast Alaska, leading hikes and whale-watching tours, and in the winter, I lead bird walks for the Eastern Shore of Virginia Master Naturalists. I contribute articles on these adventures to my blog and media outlets in Virginia.
