My forthcoming memoir explores the politics of dying in America through the lens of my wife Mary Klein's campaign to change the law in the nation's capital so she could die in peace from cancer. Winner of the Washington Wirters Publishing House literary non-fiction award, it weaves together a love story, the saga of one woman's determination to die on her terms, and my journey through the rawness of grief with her two ferocious dogs. As more and more states legalize medical aid in dying, this timely memoir challenges the reader to consider who gets to decide how we die - doctors, the religious right, or the terminally ill person?
